What inspired the design of this beautifully glowing cake?
AK Cake Design: This cake was inspired by a Rothko painting. I love the rich tones of yellow and saffron and wanted to harness the way they glow. For me, the cake stand color, ‘Heart of Gold,’ was about the center or intensity of gold. To create the look, I took a tone-on-tone approach with subtle variations of color. I then embellished with edible gold leaf to complement the lovely antique gold tone of the cake stand and to give a soft, overall vintage-y feel. The flowers are sugar roses - it's a little hard to see, but the edges are brushed with gold petal dust.
About AK Cake Design: Allison Kelleher runs a one-woman studio bakery in Portland, Oregon called AK Cake Design. She focuses exclusively on wedding cakes, specializing in clean, modern designs. She came to cake decorating with a background in studio art (specifically mixed media sculpture), and is mostly self-taught – books, trial and error, and patience, with the occasional class mixed in. What she loves about making cakes is that it lets her combine her passion for art and design with her love for all things sweet. She's very much driven by process and craftsmanship and draws her inspiration from art, nature, and patterns. AK Cake Design has been featured in the pages of Brides Magazine, Martha Stewart Real Weddings, Portland Bride & Groom, and Oregon Bride and on these blogs: Brides, Colin Cowie Weddings, The Cake Blog, Style Unveiled, Wedding Chicks, and Elizabeth Anne Designs. Allison Kelleher is a contributor to The Cake Blog and is about to have her first Craftsy class released called Modern Mosaic Cakes which will be coming out very soon! The techniques she used to create the 'Heart of Gold' cake are all covered in the class - these techniques are easy to master and incredibly versatile - check it out and enjoy! Photos by Lara Ferroni.
