What Size Cake Stand Do I Need?

What Size Cake Stand Do I Need?

The question I get asked the most is, What size cake stand do I need for my cake?  Here's the dish, you will want to choose a cake stand that is at least the same size as the bottom cake tier and cake board or bigger. Most common cake stand sizes are 10", 12", 14", 16" & 18". { You can find a selection of these cake stand sizes here.}

Depending on the design of your cake, you can either get a cake stand that is exactly the same size as the bottom cake tier and cake board:

Black Cake Stand

This look by Maggie Austin Cake creates a very clean and chic presentation because the transition from the cake to the cake stand is seamless.

Or, you can choose a wedding cake stand that is a little bigger than the bottom cake tier and cake board:

Pink Cake Stand

This look by Icing On The Top creates a small ledge for the cake decorations around the bottom cake tier. A bigger cake stand also will accommodate a larger cake board that peeks out from beneath the cake. For more design tips on your cake board, check out these three cake board looks.

I always suggest talking with your baker to make sure the cake stand you choose will work with the cake you have designed.

Extra Tip: When choosing a cake stand, make sure the top plate is completely flat so that it supports your cake properly. Any dips in the top plate can cause your cake to sag and ruin the design. {All of Sarah's Stands cake stands are designed with a flat top plate just for this reason. You can get one here.}
