January Sweets: Sunflower Cakes & Wedding Cake Flavors

The first month of a new decade is over and I hope you were able to start it off right! If not no worries, restart and try again. Don't let some arbitrary date on a calendar be the only time you can refocus. January was a whirlwind of a month for me and not really for the best reasons. So I am going to reset, refocus, and get this year going right. I would love for you to join me! Okay enough with the self-motivation speak, let's dig into some wedding cake news and take a look at the January Sweets:

Sunflower Wedding Cake Trend

As I am sure you are aware by now, I like to keep a close eye on what is trending and find out what's being searched for in the Wedding Cake world. This month there was a massive spike in people looking for Sunflower Cakes. Which until this month, I had not given much thought to. Clearly I was missing out because after spending a little too long going down the Google image rabbit hole, I am total in on the Sunflower Cake. The bright yellow color makes them so fun and festive. Sunflowers also have this effect of just making you want to smile. Which makes them ideal for a party!  From a bakers point of view, they don't seem too incredibly time-consuming so you are getting a lot of bang for the buck. So if you don't already have a sunflower cake in your portfolio, this season looks like the time to add one. Wedding Cake Flavors

Here at Sarah's Stands, I spend a lot of time talking about what's on the outside of cakes. Which makes sense because my cake stands help make wedding cakes look their best. But you know sometimes it's what's on the inside that counts. So let's spend a moment talking about cake flavors. Because no matter how pretty a cake is, it still better taste good. No matter how hard we push in the wedding industry, chocolate and vanilla will always be the top dog. It has the most mass appeal and helps couples make the most family members happy. So if you are a baker you better make sure you make an amazing chocolate and vanilla. Next, I feel like bakers need to offer 5-6 other flavors. This gives you a nice wide array and makes couples feel great about the tastings. No one wants to go to a tasting for only 3 flavors. They want to be overwhelmed with many fun options.  Lastly and perhaps most difficult, you need one signature flavor. A flavor that is either unique or that is really memorable in some way. It may even be a flavor that others may offer, but you are surely the best at that particular flavor.  Go wild and have fun here! This doesn't need to be the most popular flavor but it needs to be something that turns heads and sticks in the memory. I promise if they remember you, they are more likely to book you.

A Cake That Caught My Eye

This month a cake that caught my eye is this earthy beauty of a cake from Rose Rae Cakes. This cake looks like it was sprung from the earth in some magical forest surrounded by talking animals. The detail work is really impressive. The realism of the wood on the bottom tier is particularly eye-catching. Cake Plates:
Why you want one? How to get them for cheap!

Let's talk for a minute about cake plates. A cake plate is a flat plate that helps support and show off a cake while hiding the cake board. The best cake plates are made from fun and interesting materials that help showcase your cake. Cake plates are the darling little sister to the cake stand. If a cake stand is like a pair of high heels for a cake, then a cake plate is like a nice pair of flats. For most big affairs you will want a cake stand but sometimes a cake plate is exactly what you need. 

Now I bring this up to you because we are having a massive sale on our supply of cake plates. And when they are gone, they are gone. They were made in Australia and we will not be able to acquire them anymore. So why mark them down so crazy low (like 60% off low)? Because honestly, Derek told me he needs more room in the warehouse. The spring is coming so the inventory is increasing and he needs the space. Question of the Month

Each month to try and better understand the wedding cake world I ask a question, and then share the answer the next month. Last month I was curious to know about your feelings toward multiple cake flavors:

How many different flavors have you put into a single cake?

  • 54.5%  - 1-3
  • 40.9%  - 4-5
  • 4.5%    - 6-8
  • 0%       - 9+

Very interesting. I guess asking for 9 or more flavors in a single cake was a bit of a stretch, but I had to know. If you are in the six to eight flavors give yourself a hardy pat on the back because that is impressive. Plus, I am really curious about what size cakes these were. For the majority of you in the one to three flavors, the gauntlet has now been thrown can you challenge yourself to get a few more flavors in and still keep it tasting amazing? Not that the number of flavors proves you are a better or worse baker, but sometimes its good to challenge yourself.
